The design of the Nevada Veterans’ Nursing Home concentrates on the creation of a comfortable environment with positive stimulus for the elderly.  Comprehensive research in psychiatric and geriatric care led to the use of design strategies that combat problems faced in this type of environment.  Therapeutic stimulation both physical and sensual as well as remembrance therapy have proven to be positive influences on patients’ moods and ability to relax.  The design approaches used to best serve this particular user group were the incorporation of a return-path (figure eight) system, ample shaded seating, non-poisonous and non-toxic plant material, and the avoidance of shadowy areas.
